When the trip was over, both Lady Isabella and the Earl were exhausted. They'd made a considerable dent in a body of work that had been put off for years in some cases, but it took several days to recover from the effort.

As they did, Isabella became quite concerned. One of her primary ulterior motives in the timing of the trip was to avoid having to think about what would come next. Now that she was back, though, she was disappointed to learn that no invitation had arrived while they were gone.

Once they were both sufficiently rested, Isabella and the Earl began checking their respective sources who traveled throughout the counties to see what had happened while they were gone. Sadly, information was sorely lacking; it seemed it had merely been a fallow period when nothing much was going on.

Finally, Isabella decided to visit her father one morning when he was working in his study. Word was already coming in from some of the towns and villages they'd visited, and the Earl looked quite pleased as he compiled the results.

“Things went well, I should say,” he said, looking up after he heard Isabella's knock. “We should have done this a long time ago.”

“Yes, father,” she said, looking slightly downcast.

The Earl frowned in confusion. “Is something wrong, daughter? You look askance.”

She shook her head when she saw his concern, trying to shake off her mood. “I am sorry, father,” Isabella said. “I'm afraid I was expecting news of a different sort.”

The Earl sighed. “As was I,” he agreed. “It is difficult to know what to make of it.”

“What do you think we should do?” she asked finally, wondering where Lord Jeffrey was and what he was doing at this exact moment.

“I do not know, daughter,” he said, even though he already knew what she was thinking.

“Perhaps we should make the journey to Leicester,” she said hopefully.

He shook his head. “That would be a mistake, I believe,” the Earl replied.

“How so?” she asked.

The Earl shrugged. “It would just be a grave tactical error,” he explained. “Without knowing any of the circumstances or the situation in Leicester.”

“I suppose, father,” Isabella said, heaving a deep sigh.

He looked at her and smiled gently. “I know how hard this is, Isabella,” he commiserated. “And I know how anxious your heart is as well.”

“Yes,” she said, deciding not to try to deny it. “It is very hard to bear up right now.”

“But we must do so,” the Earl pointed out. “To do otherwise could very well be folly.”

Isabella balled her hands into fists, wishing she had some sort of outlet for all the strong emotions she was feeling right now.

“What do you think will happen, father?” she asked, finally, her exasperation beginning to show through.

But the Earl was more than willing to rely on his wisdom and experience to see them through.

“If the emotions you are feeling for young Lord Jeffrey are genuine and true, then I suspect he is probably feeling them at this very moment,” he observed.
